Abelia, a genus of evergreen plant that includes at least fifteen different shrubs, some seeds that are 100% evergreen and not evergreen and that suffer a little from too rigid temperatures. They are plants native to countries such as China and Japan, in many cases, but some come from Mexico. They are quite adaptable, therefore considered rustic plants, and of excellent appearance, not only when they bloom but also only for how luxuriant the leaves are.

Abelia Grandiflora

Among all the species of Abelia cultivate the one that goes the most in the garden is this. There A. Grandiflora. It is a hybrid that was born in China, characterized by a general aspect that we can define "Rounded". Undoubtedly pleasant and able to reach even the 120 cm high.

Let's try to describe it: evergreen, like Abelia, has long stems not particularly branched and a red color. The longer they become, the more likely they are to curve as if bearing the weight of leaves and any flowers. The leaves, in reality, are not that heavy: oval and serrated are not large and have one consistency that can be assimilated to that of leather.

The color of the adult leaves of the Abelia it's a nice one dark green and glossy but the younger ones sprout bronze color giving the whole plant, especially in autumn, one romantic and warm color. This particular species of Abelia, more than the others we will know, it requires particularly regular watering, when young, then once adult, like all the others it also adapts to periods of drought or our distracted forgetfulness. Without exaggerating.

Abelia Kaleidoscope

Another one variety of Abelia that we are going to admire is the kaleidoscope, a name that promises wonders. And it doesn't disappoint: it is a shrub with shiny leaves lemon yellow color, in summer, more tending to the "classic" reddish, when you go towards autumn. When the flowers appear, the leaves can also appear variegated with green, a color that goes well with that pinkish white of the petals.

L'Abelia Kaleidoscope it is usually a species chosen to decorate small flower beds or flower boxes because its roots are not invasive and do not damage the neighbors and the soil, its flowers appear in summer, late in the season, however, and last until late autumn, small and scented. If we want to create pleasant combinations with the Kaleidoscope, it is advisable to associate with its yellowish leaves that prevail over the tints of the outside, others are plants that make contrast, for example other always green with dark leaves such as the Cherry laurel, there Photinia, the Viburnum.

Abelia Variegata

It is the turn ofVariegated abelia and in this case the name is already exhaustive. The only feature I can want to point out is that the variegation is that between yellow and green, although knowing this plant was something imaginable. With 5 euros online it's easy to get 3 seedlings in a pot to keep in a 7 cm pot of this variety, already rooted seedlings, not cuttings.

Abelia: plant and characteristics

As a rustic plant, theAbelia adapts to different positions but if he can choose, he is in the sun or in half shade. It can also be grown in the ground, in the garden or in flower beds, but it is more often encountered in pots, perhaps also because when the temperatures drop too much it is preferable to take it away from the elements.

To get one in the spring lush growth, and a subsequent abundant flowering in the summer months, the advice is to prune drastically the plant at the base already in the autumn months, from March onwards instead, the seedlings must be watered once a week. In winter much less but without ever giving up completely.

In the vegetative phase, fertilizer must be used together with water, the one for flowering plants, to be dissolved during watering at least once every 15 days. So easy to grow there'Abelia that we can also buy some 40 plants, online the price is 60 euros.

Abelia: flowering

So far I have only mentioned the Abelia flowers but it's not because they don't deserve attention, here is a paragraph all for them. They appear not very punctual, indeed, in full summer, but with generous abundance. They are small and with a nice one trumpet shape, of white-pink color. Over time they recover resisting until the first cold and give life to the fruit, a woody achene, containing a single seed.

To ensure more abundant flowering, it is best to use a soil rich in organic material and very well drained and plant theAbelia in a pit in which it can be comfortable, first preparing a layer of coarse-grained sand, good soil and fertilizer on the bottom that help to take root without shyness.

Abelia: curiosity

The original and serious name of Abelia is "Abelia chinensis”And was discovered around 1800, by a doctor named Clarke Abel. Here is the explanation of the name: this gentleman with a name that is anything but Chinese, went to China because he was interested in studying the plants of this country, in search of wondrous shrubs with magical powers. He found theAbelia and he baptized it. It has no particular beneficial properties but it knows how to protect itself from diseases and parasites and is in good health.
