How to smooth wood: advice on wood sanding. From smoothing with sandpaper to using the plane. The grain of the sandpaper to be used, the use of the drill to smooth the wood and many useful tips.
With thewood sandingwe are going to define a degree of finish a lotsmooth. Asandingit is all the moreendthe more the abrasive medium used has evolved. Forsmooth the woodyou have to have a lot of patience because one pass ofsandpaper!
Theresmoothing the woodit is obtained with a gradual work where we can use different abrasive products such as,abrasive papersof differentgrains.
Therewood sanding can be divided into several stages, the first being coarser and we talk aboutroughing, then we move on tosmoothingand then atfinish. The result depends on manpower, on the means used but above all on the quality of the wood.
If thewood to be sandedis already varnished and has been looking for a way to smooth varnished wood, we invite you to read our guide"How to remove paint from wood".
How to smooth wood: roughing
Wood roughing, how is it done?
- By hand, with a fine-toothed rasp
- With the drill, using a grinding wheel
- With a sanding cylinder
- With the drill, using a backing pad with an abrasive cloth
With theroughingyou go to smooth out or shape the wood further, to do it by hand you use onefine-toothed rasp.
To obtain a good result, the roughing of the wood is carried out along the cutting lines.
Thereroughing can be done with the drill. Instead of the fuses, an abrasive flap wheel is applied to the drill.
Alternatively, you can use a sanding cylinder covered with abrasive material, the cylinder is particularly suitable for shaped wooden profiles. For a deep degreasing you can use a plane.
Degreasing is a quick operation that will serve you to remove "the bulk" and lay the foundations for the most delicate finishes.
Beware of wood resin!
Before moving on tosmoothing, use a rag soaked in trichlorethylene to remove any resin residue. The resin makes the work of any abrasive material ineffective by preventing thewood sanding.
Plan the wood
When it comes tosmooth the wood, the planer is a good ally. The planer is used for woodworking, for shaping, degreasing and is also capable ofsmooth the woodto obtain good finishes.
To plan the wood you have to study the measurements of the finished piece well. Those who are beginners could do some preliminary experiments using low-quality wood: consider, however, that the final result is strongly conditioned by the type of wood used.
Forplaning the woodplace the front part of the sole of the blade on the piece of wood to be worked and push forward by applying pressure on the front handle. If you start with the front handle, at the end of the pass you will have to be more decisive on the rear one by moving the pressure here.
How to smooth wood
Aftersanded the woodas seen in the previous paragraphs, you can move on to thesmoothing. Theresmoothing the woodit is done only when the wood is hard.
Carefully clean the surface of the wood, also in this case you will have to use a damp cloth and apply trichlorethylene in case of resin leakage.
For an accuratesmoothing the wood, wipe the entire surface to be treated very gently with a specific extra-fine steel wool, you will find it in specialized shops (Brico, Leroy Merlin ...). Perform slow, delicate movements that always move in the direction of the wood fibers. With the scourer you do not have to exert pressure, the touch must be light and the work must be repeated several times, interspersed with the removal of the powder produced.
How to smooth wood with sandpaper
They call hersandpaper, sandpaper, sandpaper ... it is a sheet made up of a sturdy paper support covered with abrasive granules.
Depending on the size of the granules, thesandpaperit can be more or less delicate with a different degree of finish. This property is indicated with the name "grain”And assumes a progressive numerical value ranging from 40 (for thesandpapervery coarse) up to 400 (for thesand papermore delicate). Therefore, the higher the number, the higher the finish.
The abrasive paper can be operated by hand or with special rods. After several passes with the coarse grain (from 60 to 100) you will have to switch to a finer grain (from 100 to 300) to end up with a very fine grain (400).
Whensmooth the wood always remember to be delicate: you can remedy an uneven smoothing but you can never go back if your intervention was too deep!
Sanders with sandpaper are very accessible. Among the various market proposals we point out the one with the best value for money: the Black + Decker KA2000-QS multi-function sander proposed at a price of 47.53 euros on Amazon.
