If you are passionate about bonsai cultivation and care but are a beginner, you may find the guide usefulhow to make a bonsai from seed or branch. On this page we will see how to repot the bonsai and when to do the repotting.

When to repot the bonsai

How to understand when the right time has come to decant the bonsai?
The root system must be observed. The decanting is done when the roots come out of the pot holes.

We must limit the growth of these small trees to a minimum, therefore therepotting of bonsaiit should be performed only when the roots no longer have soil at their disposal and therefore, even when we try to irrigate it, the plant remains wet for too short a time.

Remember to also pay attention to the water absorption times: if the soil is completely occupied by the roots, it will not be able to absorb water and the soil will remain wet for a short time.

How to decant the bonsai, procedure

1) Remove the bonsai from the pot

Remove the plant from the pot, to do so without exerting traction, break all the soil along the edges of the pot using a special pointed stick.

2) Free the roots

Gently grab the plant at the base of the trunk and place it on the work surface. Gently, free the roots from the soil until you get the clean skein of the entire root system.

3) Prune the roots

Therepruningroots of bonsai are performed with the same criterion of the branches. The most vigorous roots are limited to favor the development of the thinnest capillaries.

To prune the roots of bonsai in an optimal way, also cut away the tap roots, that is those that have an anchoring function (they are the most tenacious ones) and not of absorption. Also remove any dry roots but, ideally, your bonsai should not have any.

For pruning, use specific scissors like these:thin blade scissors. We have pointed out the model"Sunflower"because the cheapest, but you can choose the one you prefer.

4) Prepare the vase

Thedecanting a bonsaiit does not always require a new container. You can also use the old vase by running therepottingjust to renew the soil and prune the roots. In the case of a new container, the new vase will only have to be slightly larger than the previous one.

At the bottom of the pot, arrange a net capable of retaining the soil carried by the irrigations. The mesh must be placed exclusively in correspondence with the drainage holes of the vase. Also add two ductile metal wires that will serve to anchor the sod to the pot.

5) Soil for bonsai

Cover the bottom of the pot with a specific substrate for akadama type bonsai. Insert the clod of the bonsai into the pot by placing it in a slightly off-center position (it is a mere aesthetic choice, moving the bonsai to the right or left, the entire composition will give a feeling of dynamism).

6) Fill the jar

Secure the sod by crossing the previously inserted metal wires. Use the pointed tool again to push the new substrate between the root skeins. Add all the soil until the pot is full but without suffocating the collar of the plant.

Finish repotting by irrigating the soil so as to favor the adhesion of the soil to the roots.
