How to build a fence: instructions to get a garden wooden fence with wooden posts or pallets to recycle.

Before you seehow to build a fenceit is good to make some clarifications on the wood to choose.

Which wood to choose for a DIY fence?

Wood for outdoors is often treated with toxic materials, so it is advisable to make appropriate commercial choices. When purchasing, make sure that the chosen wood has been planed, milled, sanded and pressure impregnated in an autoclave with non-toxic and ecological mineral salts.

You canbuild a fencewith the classic platforms / platforms orpallet. In this case, it will be creative recycling but ... you will be forced to use chemical impregnants to make the wood of the pallets waterproof and long-lasting.

First we are dedicated to DIY with pallets and then we will see the general instructions forbuild a DIY garden fence.

How to build a pallet fence

With ipalletit's possiblebuild a fence do-it-yourself.The standard size pallets (80 x 120) will give you 5 slats of 120 cm each.

Based on these considerations, calculate the number ofpalletthat you will need to build thefence.

Here is what you need:

  • Crowbar
  • Hammer and nails
  • Sandpaper
  • Pincer
  • Jigsaw and sander
  • Impregnating agent for wood
  • Pencil and ruler
  • Brushes

Disassemble the “pallet feet” using the crowbar. By feet we mean those three bases that allow the pallet to be supported.

Once the "feet" have been removed, remove the nails using the pincers. The nails should only be removed from the first two horizontal strips. The horizontal strip placed in the upper part must be removed and with it also the residual nails.

When you are finished, you will have to end up with a pallet made up of 6 vertical slats and only two horizontal slats, the ones that previously housed "the support feet of the pallet".

Repeat this process for all the platforms you intend to use to build thefence with pallets.

After you have finished, arm yourself with a pencil and ruler and trace the tips toDIY fence. Saw off the excess wood and trace with the pencil. At this stage you will need a jigsaw.

Finally, sand the wood using a wood sandpaper. Dust and, with a brush, start applying two coats of impregnating agent.

When the primer has dried, you can color the fences with the paint you prefer.

A jigsaw is nothing complicated to use! Indeed, it makes the jobs ofdo-it-yourself with wood easier to complete. These devices can be found in large shopping malls at prices around 60 - 80 euros. There are even more expensive ones!

On Amazon there are models starting from 35 - 40 euros. Among the various proposals, for the excellent value for money, I point out the Bosch Compact Easy jigsaw that can be bought for € 50.46 and free shipping.

How to build a fence, what you need

In this first part, we will seehow to build a wooden fencethat is long-lasting. That's why we will have foundations built for every single post that you are going to bury.

  • Crushed stone or inert material for foundations
  • Concrete
  • Detached, uprights, battens, transoms, poles….
  • Carpenter nails
  • Self-tapping wood screws with a diameter of 8 mm and a length of 8 cm
  • Finishing or staining varnish

You will need the classic work tools such as saw, hammer, screwdriver / drill, brushes and excavation tools for the foundations (shovel and / or spade).

How to build a fence, the preliminaries of the work

To facilitate your work, on the uprights, mark the position of the crossbeams and that of the ground. The posts are the posts that will be driven into the ground vertically. The crosspieces are those posts that will be placed vertically along yoursDIY wooden fence.

On the crossbeams, mark the position of the slats (uprights), spacing them as you wish.

How do you know how many battens (posts or posts) you will need?

A standard fence, for each 2 meter module, carries 2 side uprights (ideally two uprights with a section of 10 × 10 cm) and 13 battens 110 cm high (for a 110 cm high fence, 100 cm of batten and 10 cm of distance from the ground).

The crosspieces must be 210 cm long so as to cover the entire two-meter section and allow fixing to the two side uprights.

DIY fence

For each upright, dig a hole 50 cm deep and able to accommodate the entire diameter of the upright itself plus the foundations.

Each side of the hole should be approximately 30 cm if you have purchased 10 × 10 cm posts.

Fill the holes with 10 cm of inert foundation material (gravel, crushed stone…). Position and prop the uprights, pour the concrete keeping 5 cm below the ground level.

Before mounting to the posts, pre-assemble the batten sections by nailing the battens to two crossbeams, so that all battens are at the same height.

When the concrete is completely dry, screw the crosspieces to the uprights (crosspieces including slats!).

If necessary, brush the fence with a primer and, once dry, coat with a varnish or wood stain.
